Teen Driver Lessons & Course FAQs

Within Texas, teenagers are legally permitted to start the classroom theory phase of a driver education course at 14 years of age. Nonetheless, they are strictly prohibited from applying for their tangible Learner License (Permit) at the DPS facility until they reach their 15th birthday and have properly completed the initial 6 hours of theoretical classroom education.

Based on the newly revised Texas state statutes, teenagers are mandated to complete a 24-hour theoretical classroom course (which was reduced from the older 32-hour standard). Furthermore, they must finish 14 hours of expert in-car training alongside our certified educators, which is split precisely into 7 hours of hands-on driving practice and 7 hours of focused in-car observation of fellow students.

An adolescent possessing a Learner License must constantly be supervised by a licensed adult who is a minimum of 21 years old and positioned immediately in the front passenger seating area. The adolescent is absolutely forbidden from utilizing cellular phones or any wireless communication gadgets while operating the vehicle, and they are required to maintain this permit without violations for a minimum of 6 consecutive months before elevating to a provisional license status.

Beyond verifying your teenager is registered in a TDLR-sanctioned course, parents are required to meticulously complete and authorize an official 30-Hour Driving Log. This specific log monitors 30 hours of supplemental behind-the-wheel training executed outside of formal driving instruction, and a minimum of 10 of those logged hours must be driven specifically during nighttime. Parents are also required to escort their teenager to their final road test booking.

The Provisional License authorizes teenagers to operate a vehicle securely on their own, but it imposes three rigorous state-mandated boundaries: driving is prohibited between the hours of midnight and 5:00 AM (unless required for compulsory educational or occupational purposes), carrying more than a single non-family passenger under the age of 21 in the car is forbidden, and there is a total prohibition on cellular phone utilization (which includes hands-free systems). Every one of these restrictions is automatically removed upon turning 18 years old.
